Write for the journal
We believe kava deserves more than surface-level coverage. If you’re passionate about it and want to help elevate the conversation, we’d love to hear from you.
The pitch
Contribute to our kava story
Much of what’s written about kava online skews toward either uncritical marketing or exaggerated skepticism. We’re out to elevate the conversation with thoughtful, well-sourced storytelling — and we’d welcome your help.
What we’re looking for
Thoroughly researched
Claims backed by solid sources — studies, primary texts or expert quotes. Not vague impressions dressed up as facts.
Honest about uncertainty
The science has knowns and unknowns. We want writing that recognises both, without overhyping what’s actually there.
Engaging for non-specialists
Written for smart, curious readers who may not have a science background. Specialist-only jargon isn’t the right fit here.
Original and fresh
New insight, unpublished elsewhere, from your own thinking rather than rehashed content.
Topics we’d love to explore
- In-depth analyses of specific kavalactones and their mechanisms.
- Ethnobotanical research or cultural narratives from Pacific communities.
- Critical evaluations of clinical trials — methods, limitations and interpretation.
- Comparative studies of how different preparation methods change the final drink.
- A history of kava regulation across markets: what happened, why, and how it evolved.
- Profiles of distinct cultivars and their botanical character.
- Authentic portrayals of kava-bar culture — what’s happening now, and where it’s heading.
- Anything genuinely original that you feel is worth sharing.
What we’re not looking for
- General “what is kava” explainers — we’ve got those covered.
- Brand reviews, product recommendations, or anything resembling marketing.
- Personal anecdotes with no broader context or reporting.
- Claims of therapeutic or medical benefit without robust clinical evidence.
